We gather information through an ongoing dialogue with the community to identify the kids which are suitable for the School Book Bank program. We seek to help recipients enrolled in schools developed out of local charitable efforts. In the case of our second partner school, the school was developed to provide learning opportunities for the poor: the land was donated, building material and construction volunteered, teachers have low salaries etc... This is an example of an initiative towards education for our ideal recipients forming the basis to partner and by including all the parties we successfully provided the services of the School Book Bank. We involve the book suppliers, the teachers, the priests, the pastors, the guardians, the parents and the community to support our education programs for kids otherwise unable to attend school with books. We visit the kids’ households to further understand their circumstances and establish a relationship with the guardians, relatives or parents. We maintain a database of the School Book Bank with every distribution made. Every recipient has a distribution list and a profile. The kids have a "tangible" emotional response of gratitude, joy and curiosity to learn. The value provided by the School Book Bank is everlasting. Each School Book serves new students year after year. Regardless of how low these tuitions fees seem, the average family can't always afford it, so School Books are most often forfeited. The School Book Bank is extremely needed to plant stronger seeds for a self-sustainable generation of Haitians. Education must be at the core of any short, medium and long term strategy. Please visit the recent statistics page regarding education for in depth charts. Currently, 80% or more of the Haitian education system is privatized. The UN, World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, and USAID are planning to strengthen the private sector and have provided research on how to move forward. The “Education For All” initiative led by UNESCO aiming to achieve universal access to learning by 2015 has not improved access to the Haitian education system. The most recent efforts by the Haitian government to use revenues towards education have not systemically changed the access to education. Families in Haiti have a strong desire to educate their kids and income constraints and extreme poverty are the main reason why illiteracy rates are the highest on this hemisphere. Prohibitive school attendance due to tuition fees and limited income to purchase the School Books are the leading reasons why kids go to school without School Books. The entire class learning opportunity and teaching performance is negatively compromised. The School Book Bank provides all the School Books chosen by the principals and teachers according to the Haitian Department of Education. The School Books suppliers provide training and counseling to effectively improve the quality of education.
