Research on the Wealth and Location of Households Hosting Restavek

There is a large difference in the household wealth of homes based on the gender of its domestic workers. Generally, there are two main dimensions. Particularly, these are the wealth of the household and its location. Overall, girl domestic workers are generally placed in wealthier households. 
 
The accompanying graph highlights the wealth of households with girl domestic workers.
 
In conclusion, the vast majority of the richest households place girl domestic workers.
 
Also, girl domestic workers are in wealthier households in the vicinity of Port Au Prince. In comparison, male ones are in the poorest households outside of the Port Au Prince area. Usually, these are rural areas.

Restavek

In Haiti, many poor rural families send their children to be domestic servants. Specifically, they want to give them a better future in the homes of urban / semi-urban families. Ordinarily, these children are girls. They are vulnerable to emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. People call these children Restavek.

Haiti Now relied on data obtained from the FAFO Research Foundation and the Institut Haitian del’ Enfance. The data was collected from 2013 - 2014.

  • healthy socialization with peers and adults
